UNESCO Workshop Hosted in Perth

Culture Perth & Kinross -

Local to Global is a programme delivered by the UK National Commission for UNESCO, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, that strengthens and connects UNESCO Designated Sites across the UK.

By connecting local heritage to global goals, Local to Global demonstrates the power of UNESCO sites to inspire change, test new approaches, and amplify their impact. This evolving network empowers UK communities to preserve their unique heritage while contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive future.

In a unique approach, Local to Global bring together various types of UNESCO designated sites for discussions. These designations are World Heritage Sites, Biospheres, Geoparks, and Creative Cities.

On Monday 31 March 2025, representatives from all of Scotland’s World Heritage Sites, Biospheres, Geoparks, and Creative Cities were invited to Perth for the second round of Local to Global workshop sessions. The workshop was held in Perth Ideas Centre within Perth Creative Exchange and was a successful day of discussing sustainable approaches to heritage preservation in the various designation sites.

Alongside the workshop, there was also an exhibition hosted by Perth Theatre called Future_scapes.

The Future_scapes exhibition explored design-led ideas that respond to how our land, nature and heritage are being affected by climate change, and asked audiences to consider what the future is in their ____scape.

Climate change is increasingly impacting our lives and landscapes. Through the Climate Change & UNESCO Heritage pilot, the UK National Commission for UNESCO (UKNC) is exploring how historic and natural sites can develop, adopt and be catalysts for long-term approaches that address these impacts.

Through the pilot, three UNESCO sites across the UK have been trialling collaborative and innovative ways to bring communities and organisations together, to help shape responses to climate change at both local and national levels. This exhibition is a reflection of some of the outcomes while also exploring how your local area can adopt similar approaches to respond to macro and micro challenges collaboratively.
