Frederick Douglass was one of the most photographed men in 19th-century America, and this practical workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore photography, representation and self-image.
Inspired by our exhibition Lessons of the Hour, this hands-on session at Perth Creative Exchange delves into the craft of traditional image-making. Discover the photographic techniques of Douglass’ time and the powerful ways he used the medium to shape his public identity and challenge perceptions.
Participants will experience photography from both sides of the lens, creating self-led portraits and learning how to use a traditional wooden plate camera, complete with a ground glass screen and dark cloth. The workshop also provides an engaging introduction to silver-based photographic processes and their lasting influence on the development of photography.
What to expect:
– A collaborative and fun experience taking turns as photographer and portrait sitter
– Get hands-on with a traditional large format bellows camera
