Proudfoot – William Proudfoot (1822-1902)

William Proudfoot was a self taught watercolourist’s of local views; William was born in Perth (baptised 6 October) 1822 and died in Perth (7 January 1902)

Things to know about William

  • William was the son of David Proudfoot (a farmer) and his wife Elizabeth Wylie
  • William’s brother John was also an artist who lived in Edinburgh
  • William appears to have been self taught and took up watercolour quite late in life
  • William exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin as well as in local exhibitions in Perth
  • William travelled to Europe in 1844-46 staying in Rome for 10 months and Tivoli for 3 months
  • William’s fellow passengers on the steamer out included the Victorian novelist Charles Dickens
  • William became friendly with the English sculptor John Gibson and fellow Perthshire sculptor Lawrence (Lorenzo)
  • MacDonald (of Findo Gask) during his time in Rome
  • William painted many pictures from or close to his house at 6 Charlotte Street, Perth
