As a library member, you can download eBooks directly onto your device.
To use this fantastic free service you will need a Perth and Kinross library membership, internet access and a compatible device(iOS/Android devices, Kindle Fire and Kobo in some limited circumstances – see below*).
If you’re already a library member and have an Adobe ID:
If you’re not a member and if you live or work in Perth and Kinross, why not join the library to use this service.
There are just a few steps required to get your device ready the first time you download:
- You must create an Adobe ID to authenticate your device for use with our service.
- Download one of the many free e-reader apps to read e-books on a mobile device. We recommend Libro (iOS / Android) or Bluefire Reader (iOS / Android / Kindle – see Kindle Owners section below)
- Download the free software from the Adobe Digital Editions website (only needed for e-readers that you cannot download e-books onto directly).
Children under the age of 13 will not be able to create an Adobe ID. We recommend having a parent or guardian create an Adobe ID on their behalf.
If you require further information or assistance for these steps, please view the Help and FAQ’s.
Download an e-book
Using your library card number and PIN, you can login into the e-book service and select up to 8 titles to download at any one time.
When using a mobile device to access our e-books service, you now have the option of downloading the new LIBRO e-reader app. However, if you would rather continue using your usual e-reader, all you need to do is select “Continue to our Catalogue” shown below the download icon, to browse our site as normal (without using LIBRO).
Please note that users still need to authorise LIBRO with an Adobe ID in order to download eBooks using the new app.
Reserve an e-book
The e-book service allows you to reserve a title which has already been downloaded by another user. If you wish to include your email address with the reservation you will be alerted as soon as the title becomes available.
Renew an e-book
Loans cannot be renewed, but if you need more time you can download it again if there are no reservations for the e-book.
If there are reservations then you will need to add your details to the reservation list and you will be notified when the e-book is available for you to download.
Return an e-book
It is not possible to ‘return’ an e-book once it is taken out on loan. Each title has a loan period for up to 21 days at which point the title will expire and will no longer be readable on your computer or e-reader.
There are no charges for ‘overdue’ e-books. Once your borrowing time is up, the title will no longer be available on your device.
For reasons beyond our control, the service is not available for all Kindle e-readers including the original, Paperwhite and Voyage. However, the Kindle Fire is compatible with the service. You can also find free e-books for original Kindle e-readers from the following websites:
- Project Gutenberg offers over 42,000 free ebooks; download them or read them online.
- Bibliomania offers full text editions of over 2,000 classic works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and reference titles.
Newer versions of the Adobe and Kobo* software that is needed to read our e-books have had some compatibility issues reported, which can prevent the download and display of e-books. We have instructions available [348kb] for anyone wanting to use their Kobo exclusively with our e-book lending service. However, we cannot guarantee that Kobo e-readers are fully compatible with our e-book lending service.
